Here's the script I use to back up my mac (edit appropriately, and create the right area on some other computer): 

time sudo /usr/bin/rsync --rsync-path=/usr/bin/rsync -a -z -v --exclude "Movies/" 
--exclude "Music/" --exclude "Pictures/" /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Users/gusbroo 
"gusbroo@karthur.nevis.columbia.edu:/data/gusbroo/backup"
